Jaigarh – The Majestic Victory Fort

Located about 15 km away from the Pink City, Jaigarh is a memorial stronghold originally built to strengthen the security of capital Jaipur. The splendid Fort situated atop CheelkaTeela (Hill of Eagles) is a centre of tourist attraction round the year with its unique features. The Fort towering at the height of 500 meters above the sea level and 400 meters above Amer Fort, offers a scenic panoramic view of the entire city. The grandiose structure is spread across 3 kilometres and was erected by Rajput Maharaja Jai Singh II to protect the Amer Fort and the palace within the premises; hence it was named after him.

The entire heritage complex includes many structures that remind us of medieval India. The fort consists of mesmerizing palaces, huge warehouse, cannon foundry, tall tower and ancient temples. The building served as the epicentre of artillery production for the royal family during the Mughal era. The construction began in the 15th century and continued until the early 18th century. 

This incredible fort boasts of its marvellous architecture and vintage interiors. The detailed carvings and amazing mirror work make it a worth place of visiting. The historic fort has well-organized tourist rides that take visitors to the Amber fort.

What’s so special about Jaigarh?

Jaigarh Fort entices those who wish to know how the Rajput rulers during the Mughal dynasty defended their regions from foreign enemies and how they gained the military advantage over them. With embellished exteriors and interiors, the unique feature of this fort is the lattice-worked windows through which you can watch the surrounding scenery along with the large Persian garden having four distinct parts. The Fort is a highly reinforced structure with thick red stone walls.

The main highlight of Jaigarh is the Jaivana Cannon which is the largest canon in the world. It was constructed within the Fort itself and took part in several battles. Another crucial purpose of the fort was to store arms and ammunition for the Amer Fort in case of war. The armoury chamber stocks a wide range of arms including swords, shields and guns showcasing the valour of the Rajput rulers.

The Fort also houses beautiful palaces with courtrooms and large halls with screened windows. There is also a museum which is situated on the left to the Awami Gate. It exhibits stamps and artifacts, photographs of Jaipur Royals and a spittoon built in the 15th century. 

Other than these, the Fort also exhibits mastery of architecture which is reflected in water channels forming an important part of rainwater harvesting. The complex houses three large underground water tanks of which the largest one having the capacity to hold 60 million gallons of water.

Where are the mandirs in Jaigarh located?                                           

There are several exquisite mandirs or temples within the complex namely; Lalit Mandir, Ram Harihar, Vilas Mandir, Laxmi Vilas, KalBhairav and Aram Mandir. The Aram Mandir is a magnificent piece of architecture featuring a beautiful triple-arched entrance. The main entry of this mandir is through AwaniDarwaza which was rejuvenated in recent times to give a picturesque view of the Sagar Lake located nearby.

The true glimpse of the architectural marvel of that age is incomplete without visiting Amer Fort or Amber Palace, Sheesh Mahal and Nahargarh Fort. 

What are the timings and cost of tickets for visiting Jaigarh?

The Fort is best viewed during the daytime and is opened on all days of the week from 9 am to 5 pm. History buffs can wander inside the complex for a nominal fee. For Indian nationals the fee is Rs. 70 while for foreign tourists its Rs. 150.

How to reach Jaigarh?

As the fort is near the city, reaching there is quite easy through road. You can hire cabs or private taxis, tourist buses or take local transport such mini-buses e-rickshaw or auto rickshaws.

From Jaipur Railway Station

Once you reach the Jaipur Railway Station, the cheapest way to get to Jaigarh is through bus which will cost under Rs. 50 and will take around an hour of time. The approximate distance between the two points is around 12 km. But if you are looking the fastest way to get there, then it takes hardly around 20 minutes if you hire a cab which will cost you not more than Rs. 250.

From Jaipur Sanganer Airport

The airport is also not too far away from the monument and is only 20 km. For a hassle-free ride, hire a taxi which would drop you at the destination within 40 minutes.
